Thomas' father was William Atherton Tomlinson and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Buckley. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Bolton Tomlinson and Ellen Atherton; his maternal grandparents were William Buckley and Ann Nuttall. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Edward, Polly, Ellen and Mary. He died at the age of 1 in June 1886 in Bolton.¹
