John was born in 1693 in Slaithwaite and his christening took place there on February 16th, 1693.1  John's father was Benjamin Sykes and his mother was Mrs Benjamin Sykes. He had a brother and two sisters, named Edmund, Mary and Lydia.  He was the oldest of the four children.
