John was born in 1815 in Almondbury and his christening took place there on August 27th, 1815.1  John's father was Noah Stocks and his mother was Mary Frith.  His paternal grandparents were John Stocks and Sarah Gledhill . He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry, Samuel, Ann, Sarah and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
