Arthur's father was William Smith and his mother was Lucy Alma Hill. His paternal grandparents were Henry Smith and Sarah Amy Pickles; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Hill and Mary Walton. He had four brothers and a sister, named Harry, Percy, Ernest, Joseph and Ethel. He was the second oldest of the six children.
