Joseph's father was Joseph Shipley and his mother was Ada Brereton. His paternal grandparents were William Shipley and Sarah Hunt; his maternal grandparents were John Brereton and Eliza (Lizzie) Batho. He had a brother and four sisters, named Norman, Esther, Nancy, Winnie and Ada. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 84 in January 1993 in Chichester. The funeral took place in Sussex.¹
