Emily was born in 1884 in Lichfield.1  Emily's father was William Shipley and her mother was Sarah Hunt. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Joseph, Arthur, Edward, Annie, Alice and (Ellen).  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
