Dorothy was born in 1899 in Birkenhead.1  Dorothy's father was Thomas Sherlock and her mother was Mary Ann Quigley.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, Gerard, Cicely and Lydia.  She was the third oldest of the six known children.
