Alma's father was Karl (Richard) Alexander Otto R Rueger and her mother was Marie (Merri or Mary) Frederica Westpfahl. Her maternal grandparents were Christian Friederich Westpfahl and Anna (Catharina) Soffeia Dunkacke. She had two brothers and a sister, named Bernard, Ronald and Wilma. She was the second youngest of the four children.
