Edith, known as Eda, was born in June 1889 in St. Helens.¹

Eda's father was John Robert Mercer and her mother was Emily Ann Herring. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Herbert, Douglas, Sidney, Ernest, William, Lil and Florence. She was the third youngest of the eight children.
