Norman was born in 1908 in Westhoughton.1   Norman's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Morris. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Herbert, Fred, Thomas, Clara and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the seven known children.
