Maude was born in March 1880 in Bolton.¹

Maude's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Ellen Morris. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth (Eli) Kay; her maternal grandparents were James Morris and Elizabeth (Betsy) Smith. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the three children.
