Alan was born about May 1928.  Alan's father was John W Lewis and his mother was Evelyn Mary Dittmer.  His maternal grandparents were Johann (Chris) Heinrich Christoph Dittmer and Katharina (Margaret) Margaretha Maria Heuer. He had three brothers and a sister, named Kenneth, Norman, Gordon and Dorothy.  He is the third oldest of the five children.
