Joseph's father was Joseph Henry Leadbetter and his mother was Sarah Sheppard. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Leadbetter and Phoebe Stocks. He had three brothers and a sister, named Derek, Arthur, Philip and Wendoline. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 61 in February 1993 in Birkenhead.²
