Ellen's father was John William Hughes and her mother was Jessie Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Ellen Goodman Roberts. She had four brothers and a sister, named George, Frank, Edward, Arthur and Jessie. She was the second oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 26 on July 24th, 1941 in Birkenhead.²
