Ephraim, known as Eph, was born on March 1st, 1860 in Hanley.¹

  Ephraim “Habeutt” born in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire (March, Vol. 6b, page 181). Recorded as "Habbutt" in 1861 census and then Hopwood thereafter.
  
  Born Staffordshire according to 1871,1881,1891 census, but living with parents John and Mary in Birkenhead on all three records.
  
  According to Lil Mercer's Birthday Book, Ephrain Hopwood's birthday was 1 March which is consistent with the following:

Eph's father was John Hopwood and his mother was Mary Howell. His paternal grandparents were William Hopwood and (Mary) Ann Hopwood. He had a brother and two sisters, named Arthur, Alice and Emily. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 81 in 1941 in Merionthshire.²
