Emily's father was John Hopwood and her mother was Mary Howell. Her paternal grandparents were William Hopwood and (Mary) Ann Hopwood. She had two brothers and a sister, named Eph, Arthur and Alice. She was the second youngest of the four children. She died due to a childhood disease at the age of 5 in December 1873 in Birkenhead.²
