Lewis' father was Thomas Beswick Holland and his mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Bolton Tomlinson and Ellen Atherton. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Thomas, Henry and Gertrude. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 47 in 1926 in Bolton.²
