Sarah was born in 1872 in Bolton.1   Sarah's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings.  Her maternal grandparents were John Collinge and Sarah. She had six sisters named Mary, Emma, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
