Mary was born in 1876 in Bolton.1   Mary's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings.  Her maternal grandparents were John Collinge and Sarah. She had six sisters named Sarah, Emma, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
