Emma was born in 1879 in Bolton.1   Emma's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings.  Her maternal grandparents were John Collinge and Sarah. She had six sisters named Sarah, Mary, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
