Margaret was born in 1847 in Westhoughton and her christening took place on July 4th, 1847 at Deane Parish Church.1 2  Margaret's father was Thomas Greenhalgh and her mother was Mary Grundy. She had two brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Catherine, Alice, Mary, Catherine and Rebecca.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
