Joseph was born in 1870 in Bolton.1  Joseph's father was James Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah Wright.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Greenhalgh and Mary Grundy. He had a brother and two sisters, named Adam, Mary and Maria.  He was the oldest of the four children.
