James was born in 1840 in Middle Hulton.1  James' father was Thomas Greenhalgh and his mother was Mary Grundy. He had a brother and six sisters, named William, Catherine, Margaret, Alice, Mary, Catherine and Rebecca.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
