Thomas was born in 1814 in Bolton and his christening took place on June 19th, 1814 in Deane.1 2  Thomas' father was James Flitcroft and his mother was Mary Cartwright. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Sarah, Mary, Happy and Hannah.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
