Matthew was born in March 1847 in Wrexham.¹

Matthew's father was John Eddowes and his mother was Mary Holt. He had five brothers and two sisters, named George, Edwin, Thomas, John, William, Esther and Lydia. He died at the age of 30 on July 9th, 1877 in Birkenhead. He was buried on July 11th, 1877 at the Flaybrick Memorial Gardens.²³
