John was born in March 1861 in Birkenhead.1  John's father was Edmund (Edwin) Harry Eddowes and his mother was Mary Dawson.  His paternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Mary Holt; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Dawson and Mary Rhodes. He had a brother and two sisters, named Edmund, Sarah and Lucy.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
