William was born in June 1859 in Barton upon Irwell.1  William's father was John Doxey and his mother was Sarah Worthington.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Doxey and Hannah Wimston. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Henry, George, James, Richard, Frank, Hannah, Clara and Sara.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
