Mary was born in 1922 in Liverpool.¹ Mary's father was John Francis Cross and her mother was Annie Smith. She had a brother and a sister, named Francis and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the three children. She had six half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, William, James, Albert, George, Alexander, Mary, Ruth and Lily.
