George was born in 1911 in Birkenhead.1   George's father was William Thomas Cairns and his mother was Annie Smith. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Albert, Alexander, Ruth and Lily.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Francis, Elizabeth and Mary.
