Albert was born in 1910 in Birkenhead.1   Albert's father was William Thomas Cairns and his mother was Annie Smith. He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, Alexander, Ruth and Lily.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Francis, Elizabeth and Mary.
