John was born in January 1841 in Darwen.1  John's father was Oliver Bury and his mother was Phoebe Almond. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Oliver, Betty, Susannah, Mary, Pheobe and Martha.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
