John was born in 1875 in Salford.1   John's father was John Brooks and his mother was Ellen Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were James Brooks and Elizabeth Spencer. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Edith, Annie and Florence.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, William and Mary.
