Ernest was born in September 1896 in Bolton.1  Ernest's father was Charles Brooks and his mother was Matilda Ainsworth. He had a brother named Thomas.  He was the younger of the two children. He had eleven half-brothers and two half-sisters, named George, James, Robert, Samuel, Joseph, James, John, Charles, George, William, Robert, Alice and Happy.
