Florence's father was John Brereton and her mother was Elizabeth Manley. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Catherine Rushton. She had eight brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, John, Arthur, Robert, Charles, Frederick, Harry, Catherine, Sarah, Margaret, Ellen, Gertrude and Lucy. She was the sixth oldest of the fifteen children.
