Ellen was born in 1800 and her christening took place on July 20th, 1800 in Malpas.1  Ellen's father was Thomas Brereton and her mother was Elizabeth. She had six brothers named Thomas, Benjamin, Barnabas, John, Abraham and George.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
