Mary was born in 1830 in Bolton.1   Mary's father was George Barrow and her mother was Nancy Greenhalgh.  Her paternal grandparents were John Barrow and Ann. She had six brothers and five sisters, named John, Betty, Richard, James, George, Thomas, Margaret, Eliza, Nancy, Celine and Ellen.  She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children. She had a half-brother named Edwin.
