Bernard was born in 1517 in Kentmere, Westmorland, England.1   Bernard's father is Edwin Gilpin and his mother is Margaret Layton.  His paternal grandparents are Richard Gilpin and Dortothy Thornborough; his maternal grandparents are Thomas Layton and Tunstall. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, George and Ellinor.  He died at the age of 66 on March 4th, 1583 in Houghton Le Spring, Durham, England.  He was buried in St Michael & All Angels.1 1
