# Note:

    He came to New Amsterdam in "Blauwe Duiff", 9/5/1656 and was at Fort Orange (Albany) in 1658. He had removed to New Amsterdam prior to 10/7/1663 and served as Alderman, beginning 1674 for several years. He was a carpenter and mariner. If one assumes his family followed the Dutch pattern of naming early children after their grandparents (2), his parents might have been named Lodowyck and Cornelia. His name "Lewis" was a variation of Lodowyckse which may have been a patronym. Surnames were not required in New Netherland prior to the English takeover in 1664 (3) and the surname "Lewis " [i.e. "Lodowycks" with numerous variations] may have been formalized at that time.
