Samuel was born on February 23rd, 1805 in Littleton, NH. Samuel's father was Samuel Rankin and his mother was Azubah Whitcomb. His paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon; his maternal grandparents were Major Benjamin Whitcomb Jr and Lydia Howe. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Orlean, Philamon, Diantha, Almira and Joanna. He was the third youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Albert. He died at the age of 77 in 1882.
