Elmer was born on November 14th, 1882.  Elmer's father was William Henry Rankin and his mother was Amy Ursla Kimpton.  His paternal grandparents were Orlean Rankin and Hannah Miller. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Myron, Laverne, Dewitt, Alta, Amy, Marietta, Margaret, Henrietta, Grace, Flora and Blanche.  He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.  He died due to natural causes or old age at the age of 88 on November 19th, 1970 in Detroit, MI.  He was buried at the Ridgeway Cemetery.

‌Elmer and Carrie were married in a religious ceremony on April 9th, 1910.  They had two sons named Russell and Marshall.
