Chastina was born in 1815. Chastina's father was David Rankin and her mother was Persis Daniel. Her paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon; her maternal grandparents were Increase Daniels and Elona Thayer. She had a brother and seven sisters, named David, Charissa, Melinda, Elona, Harriet, Persis, Emily and Ellen. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
