Charissa was born in 1809. Charissa's father was David Rankin and her mother was Persis Daniel. Her paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon; her maternal grandparents were Increase Daniels and Elona Thayer. She had a brother and seven sisters, named David, Melinda, Elona, Chastina, Harriet, Persis, Emily and Ellen. She was the oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 63 in 1872.
