John was born on December 15th, 1862 in Chillicothe, IL.¹ John's father was Philip Temple Matthews and his mother was Minerva Moffitt. His maternal grandparents were John Moffitt II and Maraget Dawson. He had three sisters named Lucy, Mary and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 56 on April 12th, 1919 in Chillicothe, IL. He was buried at the Chillicothe City Cemetery.¹¹
