Gordon's father was Lewis Lawrence Simpson and his mother was Mary Catherine McKinnon. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Simpson and Rebecca Willis; his maternal grandparents were Ann McDonald and Lachlan McKinnon. He had two brothers and a sister, named Ian, Lachlan and Elsie.
