Jan was born on May 14th, 1898 in Veenwouden.  Jan's father was Romke Feyes van der Wal and his mother was Maaike Alberts van der Berg.  His paternal grandparents were Feye Tijsses van der Wal and Tjibbeltje Romkes van der Veen. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Feye, Albert, Lieuwe, Lieuwe, Thijs, Dirkje, Tjibbeltje and Ymkje.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 1 on July 1st, 1899.
