Aukje was born on January 3rd, 1868 in Bergum.  Aukje's father was Reinder Romkes van der Wal and her mother was Rienkje Tiekes Bijlsma.  Her maternal grandmother was Tieke Jans Bijlsma. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Romke, Lieuwe, Tieke, Aukje, Wopkje, Antje, Lieuwkje and Joukje.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 83 on June 30th, 1951.
