Meindert was born on March 16th, 1797 in Murmerwoude.  Meindert's father was Sjoerd Sybes van der Galien and his mother was Antje Sjoukes.  His paternal grandparents were Sybe Sjoerds Galjee and Geeske Hendriks. He had six brothers named Sijbe, Sjouke, Andrijs, Durk, Hendrik and Jan.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 50 on May 4th, 1847.
