Durk was born on October 24th, 1829 in Rinsumageest.  Durk's father was Hendrik Eelkes Kooistra and his mother was Antje Durks Vellinga.  His paternal grandparents were Eelke Ruurds Kooistra and Antje Hendriks. He had a brother and four sisters, named Eelke, Jitske, Antje, Dirkje and Grietje.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at just 4 days old on October 28th, 1829.
