John's father was Absalom Scales and his mother was Ann Kenner Dalton.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Dalton Jr and Charlotte Gallahue. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Joseph, Nicholas, Absalom, Noah, Charlotte, Jane and Nancy.
