Nicholas was born on August 26th, 1817.  Nicholas' father was Nicholas Dalton and his mother was Rachel Hunter.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Dalton Jr and Charlotte Gallahue. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Samuel, James, Ewel, Leander, Robert, John, Mary, Charlotte, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susan and Pleasant.  He was the twelfth oldest of the thirteen children.
